It is obvious reading Google’s blog for the release of Duo that they are employing the same successful tactics as Whatsapp. Additionally, you will not be able to switch from an annual subscription to the Disney Bundle directly. Whatsapp revolutionised the landscape with their free, app which offered everything which BBM and iMessage did but critically was cross-device. With most users only knowing of it because some messages appear blue rather than green. And whilst in the short term that served to boost Blackberry’s sales, as teenagers and twenty-somethings flocked to buy them alongside the traditional business audience, it meant that as soon as there was a viable, cross-device alternative people abandoned Blackberry in favour of slicker smartphones whilst not losing the messaging functionality they had grown to love.Īrguably the same fate came of Apple’s iMessage. 
The issue was that it tied the user to Blackberry’s devices. It was a simple, reliable, free messaging service which just required your counterpart’s PIN. In the mid noughties, the phone to have was perhaps surprisingly a Blackberry, why? Because of BBM. With Duo, Google is hoping to do to Facetime what Whatsapp did to BBM.
